Smoke testing

Essentra Laboratories provides a series of commercial tests to analyse the constituents of cigarette smoke.

Tests are divided into two ranges; mainstream tobacco smoke and side-stream tobacco smoke, including those required by ANVISA regulation.

Mainstream tobacco smoke

For various smoking regimes and product categories, a separate set of tests is available to comply with the draft FDA Hazardous or Potentially Hazardous Compounds (HPHC) list. The set of tests include

Ammonia Ammonia
Aromatic Amines 1-aminonaphthalene, 2-aminonaphthalene, 3-aminobiphenyl, 4-aminobiphenyl
Benzo[a]pyrene Benzo[a]pyrene
Carbonyls Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, acrolein, crotonaldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone, propionaldehyde, n-Butyraldehyde
Eugenol Eugenol
Flavours Upon request
Hydrogen cyanide HCN
Menthol Menthol
Mercury Mercury (Hg)
Metals Arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), selenium (Se)
Nitric Oxide Nitric oxide
pH pH
Phenols Catechol, o-cresol, m and p-cresol, phenol, hydroquinone, resorcinol
Semi-volatiles pyridine, quinoline, styrene
Tar, nicotine, carbon monoxide (CO) TPM, water, nicotine, NFDPM, carbon monoxide (CO), puff number
Tobacco specific Nitrosamines (TSNAs)  4-(N-nitrosomethylamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone (NNK), N-nitrosonornicotine (NNN), N-nitrosoanabasine (NAB), N-nitrosoanatabine (NAT)
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)  1,3-butadiene, benzene, toluene, isoprene, acrylonitrile
