The Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) amended the list of mandatory security requirements for pharmaceutical packaging in February this year in a move against the rise in counterfeit medicines.

Using a multi-layered approach, manufacturers can combine overt and covert technologies, making it as difficult as possible for counterfeiters to succeed. As much as this is a safety issue, manufacturers should also be considering the consumer experience and how it will be impacted by the application and use of the label.
